This is my first post to the forum so I apologise if I've done something wrong. It is designed to be mounted inside a computer case but I want to use it bare on the desk.

External USB Enclosure [USB Bus Powered] for MacBook Pros Unibody 9.5mm SATA Optical DVD Drive

Could using it in this way put the drive at risk of damage, for example from electrostatic discharge or electromagnetic interference? I am NOT concerned about physical damage such as knocks and scratches. Does the external enclosure provide any meaningful protection against these two potential sources of damage to the drive? Again, I am NOT concerned about physical damage. Mar 16, , 24 , 17, Can you?

You'll have to run the SATA data and power cables outside the case somehow, and don't let the drive get knocked around. But it would work. Assuming you can weasel the cables in and out of the case, it should be no problem. To your specific questions: No more than anything else 2.

The three drive mounting screws included with this enclosure aren't really necessary, as SATA slot drives are all the same size and fit snugly. Just slide open the case and insert your drive into the SATA plug.

Slide the lid back into place, then insert and gently tighten the fully threaded screw into the one open foot. Lastly, stick on the one missing foot. External power supply not included.

Modern computers with USB 3 have plenty of power using only the one plug. Some computers with only USB 2 don't have sufficient power by themselves. It would be nice if the case were aluminum to match Apple products. This one is made of cheap looking plastic. I don't believe there are any metal cases available for sale though. Just black plastic like this one, and even cheaper ones painted silver.

The screws and foot are delivered inside the case. It would be better to have all the parts plainly visible outside the case IMO. That way it's easy to tell all the parts are present without opening the case. The three mounting screws are different than the case screw, but are packed together and look almost identical. They're not interchangeable though, so it would be better if they were easier to tell apart, or packed separately.

I would also stick on a little removable arrow to show how to open the case for the first time. It's little touches which differentiate quality products from the rest. I used this to house the Superdrive from my old MacBook Pro that died.

I haven't burned anything yet and doubt I ever will primary purpose was to be able to import audio and older photo CDs. On the down side, I really wish OWC would have made this or had one made of a stronger plastic or better yet Aluminum. I searched and searched but this is the only enclosure for a "slit style", self loading as opposed to a "tray loading" drive.

The superdrive has a thin, flexible top and the plastic on this enclosure is almost as thin and flexible. So, it deflects quite significantly if you push on it.
